The Kred app will use your phone's camera for MRZ documents, but if your venue regularly scans passports, a dedicated Kred device handles both natively and is the better choice.

Ensure the scanner window is clean. Hold the device steady, 6-8 inches from the barcode. Try adjusting the angle slightly. For passports, make sure you're scanning the MRZ lines (the two lines of text at the very bottom of the ID page).
